I meet with Kauper at Almine Rech, where his trio of nudes — drawn from black, Asian, and white models — stand sentry with their muscled physiques, clinically sculpted vaginas, and vacant eyes, which seem to follow us around the gallery as we talk. In February, the U. Steiner instead. There does seem to be some recalibration toward valuing the female gaze, based on the careers of those four, not to mention the high prices recently paid for nudes by artists like Mickalene Thomas, Jenny Saville, Lisa Yuskavage, and Ghada Amer.
In January, L. In other words, any thoroughgoing change in which men are deemed Important will take a while. Trying to make rules is a waste of energy. Progressives can take each other apart — we art it all the girl naked on google earth — when the bigger enemy is these neo-Nazis.
Can a Male Artist Still Paint a Female Nude?
Seven female artists weigh in on men painting women, and women doing it for themselves. As told to Molly Langmuir. But the subject matter is really about being alone, purely alone, and everybody identifies with that, male or female.
But Balthus, the way he gazes on those girls, is not equal, not balanced. Yet Matisse was a beautiful painter. Willem de Kooning was as well. But he was horrific to women.
Part III: Dueling Gazes
I have a massive argument with a female art historian I really respect about de Kooning. Take Turner, who painted such wonderful sunsets and seascapes.
And to know that he did that, it helps me understand his sunsets, which are so charged up and erotic. It makes me like Turner more. Egon Schiele made paintings of himself masturbating too. Many of his images are so hard-core. Whereas, in at her show at the Serpentine Gallery in London, she was a hologram.

The exhibition The Naked Man examines the ways in which the appearance of the naked male body has changed and been transformed over the last century. The changes in naked male image from the end of the nineteenth century till today are traced through eight thematic areas. For modern artists, art stripped down, naked male body was a bearer of revelation, self-knowledge and renewal. From this starting point, the exhibition follows the naked man through 20th and 21st century history, presenting challenges to the hegemonic model of male identity through the work of close to artists, from questioning traditional male role models to the search for alternatives, from facing up to gallery and fragility to exploring the desiring gaze, body worship and the erotic pose.
In the depiction of the undressed male body there are also clues as to the changing social role of men, the formation of male identity, which is inseparable from both changes occurring in society and the workings of power.
Power defines the gaze, which for centuries has been in the possession of men, while women have been merely the objects of the gaze. The exhibition reassigns the roles, since the object of the gaze is no longer women, but men.
How far this signifies the loss, sacrifice or transfer of possession of the gaze can be considered in depth with the help of thematically organised artworks. The stripped down male body is defined by particular points of crisis. In that sense, the very spirit of the life reform movement that appeared at the turn of the century was one in which the naked male body was seen as a harmonious part of nature and a symbol of the desire to renew society.
